Our Mission for the Brixham Railway Heritage Trail
We, the friends of the Brixham Railway Heritage Trail, are a community of local volunteers united by a shared vision: to breathe new life into the disused Brixham Railway line by transforming it into a safe, beautiful, and accessible cycling and walking path.
Our mission is to honour the rich heritage of the old railway, preserving its history as a thread that binds generations of our towns, while creating a vibrant greenway that connects people to nature, to one another, and to the landscapes we all cherish.
Winding through the coastal countryside, the path will be a place for recreation, reflection, and renewal — a space where walkers, cyclists, families, and visitors can move freely and safely through the heart of our community.
In celebrating the past, we are investing in our future. This project is rooted in sustainability, inclusion, and wellbeing.
It is powered by the passion of local people who believe in the value of shared spaces, the joy of the outdoors, and the quiet strength of coming together for something greater than ourselves.
With care and commitment, we aim to create not just a path, but a legacy. A legacy that speaks of history remembered, of beauty protected, and of a community walking forward — together.
What better use could be made of this trackbed than a pathway that links Churston to Brixham, especially when this could be a safe alternative to the main road into Brixham. Phase 1 will link Churston Station to Churston Village Bridge – a very important, indeed key, section for the safety of students at Churston Grammar School.
We hope it will also join up with other paths in the locality, including the America Lane, to form a cyclying and walking network for all to use.
The Project Team
Members of our project team each have different career backgrounds and skills but none of us has embarked on a project such as this with no support from a larger organisation. That was until George joined us who successfully raised and spent £240,000 on The Dartmoor Way .
We continue to seek support from local authorites and relevant organisations, but in the meantime we’re having to learn many new things fast!
We are currently focussed on getting a long term agreement for Phase 1 which will use the derelict track bed from near Churston Station to Churston Village Bridge. Then we can gain momentum on recruiting an army of volunteers that will be required to convert the old line into a practical, useable pathway.
